The first year in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference is expected to be a good one for the Hillsdale College football team, according to this year's preseason coach's poll.
The Chargers received one first-place vote and were picked to finish second in the eight-team league in the poll, released by the conference office Wednesday morning.
Ohio Dominican was picked first, receiving 52 poll points. Hillsdale was closely behind with 49, while Findlay was picked to finish third and had 48 poll points. All three schools are entering their first year competing in the G-MAC.
Conference holdover Alderson Broaddus, last year's regular season champion, was picked to finish fourth.
The 2017 Chargers return 20 of 22 starters, including the entire offensive line and starters at quarterback, running back, tight end and linebacker. This will be one of the most experienced teams Hillsdale has fielded in years, and junior wide receiver Trey Brock was named honorable mention All-American following last season.
Hillsdale opens the new campaign with four non-conference games, two at home. The first-ever G-MAC contest for the Chargers will take place on homecoming, Saturday, Sept. 30 against Kentucky Wesleyan.
