Junior Joel Pietila ended his 2016-17 season on a high note. He started 2017-18 on another high note.
Pietila was named the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Week for the new season. The award was announced and chosen by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Pietila shot a 142 in the two-round Al Watrous Invitational, held at the Bay City Country Club and hosted by Saginaw Valley State University over the weekend. His score was tied for sixth overall and led the Chargers who finished in second place as a team at the 16-team event.
After shooting a 73 in his opening round, Pietila fired a 69 in Sunday's second round to help Hillsdale climb from fifth place to second as a team. His second-round 69 was tied for the fifth-best mark overall in Sunday's second round.
Pietila was the 2016-17 GLIAC Men's Golf Individual Champion and qualified for Super Regionals as an individual, becoming the first Charger to do so since the program was revived in 2014-15.
