Alumni Highlight - Timothy Sayers '08

Hillsdale Charger Men's Cross Country and Track & Field alum, Timothy Sayers '08 was one of eight finalist for the 2018 National High School Athletic Coaches Association Girls' Cross Country Coach of the Year Award. He was announced the Regional Winner in January of this year and flew to Sioux Falls, SD in June to represent Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi at the National banquet.

Upon leading the girls' cross-country team to their fifth Mississippi State Title since his hiring at Ocean Springs in 2008, Tim was contacted by the Mississippi Association of Coaches about their desire to nominate him for this top award. His impressive resume boasts no less than nine division or regional titles, 32 All-State Runners, the 2014-2015 USTFCCCA Mississippi Girls' Cross Country Coach of the Year title, and the 2012-2013 MAC Girl's Cross Country Coach of the Year title.

"Since I've only been coaching for 10 years and others have been doing it for about 40+, I fell a little short in the scoring", Sayers explains over email. The selection process takes into account both achievement as well as total years as a head varsity coach. Coach Bob Bonk from Minnesota received the honor. "I am very happy for him- he seemed like a great guy. He was very surprised and excited!"

Tim ran from 2003-2008 at Hillsdale on the Men's Cross Country and Track & Field teams. His former coaches and teammates wish him well in his pursuit of another nomination and an eventual Coach of the Year title.
