For the second time this season, and after another huge performance, Hillsdale College's
Shea Ruddy has been named the G-MAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week.
The conference office announced the distinction on Monday, Ruddy's third time earning weekly conference honors in his career at Hillsdale. The cause was a strong game in Hillsdale's 35-10 win over Lake Erie on Saturday, as Ruddy took a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown that was his second of the season and a Hillsdale record-tying fourth of his career that matched 2006 graduate Chad Gurica's career performance.
Far from a one-dimensional player, Ruddy also led the Chargers in catches and receiving yards and added a 74-yard touchdown in the passing game to his kickoff return score. He also came very close to a truly epic performance, as on top of his two 70-plus yard touchdowns, Ruddy also had a 65-yard punt return for touchdown and another 41 yard kickoff return both nullified by penalties.
A 2024 All-American as a special teams player, Ruddy has matched his performance from last season so far, with 582 yards and two touchdowns on 18 returns for an average of 32.3 yards per return, after putting up 732 yards and two touchdowns on 22 returns for an average of 33.3 yards per return last year. He's one of just 10 players across the country with multiple kickoff returns for touchdowns so far, and his 582 return yards rank third in the nation, with a better average per return than both of the players currently in front of him. He also currently ranks first in the G-MAc and 13th in the nation in All-Purpose yards.
Ruddy and the Chargers will look for another big performance this weekend, as Hillsdale travels to Kentucky to take on Thomas More on Saturday at noon in a G-MAC clash.
