Chellman's three-run blast lifts Hillsdale past Findlay 4-1 in G-MAC Tournament

It's halfway home for the Hillsdale College softball team in the quest for a fourth G-MAC Tournament crown.

And junior Anna Chellman has played a major role in getting them there.

Chellman blasted a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth that proved to be the difference in a 4-1 victory over Findlay at Akron Firestone Stadium on Thursday in a showdown between the two teams that tied for second in the G-MAC regular season standings.

The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but Findlay had had the better of the chances, just missing scoring a run in the first inning on a close call at the plate and getting another runner to third base in the top of the third inning.

Hillsdale started their first big push of the contest in the bottom of the fourth, as Taylor Lewis led off the inning with an infield single where she beat the throw to first. Emma Vis also got on with a walk, but the next two batters made outs to bring Chellman to the plate.

Chellman worked the count on Findlay ace Kayla Dykin, fouling off several two strike pitches to stay alive in the at bat, before smashing her second home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Chargers a lead the team would never relinquish.

Findlay put big pressure on the Chargers in the top of the fifth, getting a run back and putting runners at second and third with a chance to tie the game, but Hillsdale's Joni Russell dialed up back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam and end the threat.

Hillsdale got the run back in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together three singles in four at bats to load the bases before pinch runner Ronnie Craft scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

The Chargers closed out the game over the final two innings, as Russell worked through a 1-2-3 sixth inning that included a slick diving grab in center field by Hillsdale's Emma Sather to rob a base hit. Then, in the top of the seventh, Russell worked around a Findlay double, striking out one batter and securing the win with a groundout to shortstop.

Lewis was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Chargers, and Olivia Liguori chipped in a double as well for Hillsdale.

Russell recorded her 21st victory of the season in the circle, with six strikeouts and just four hits, two walks and one earned run conceded.

Hillsdale improves to 35-16 overall and is now just two wins away from a record-tying fourth G-MAC Tournament title. Hillsdale faces fifth-seeded Ohio Dominican, who upset top-seeded Tiffin in a 3-1 game in extra innings on Thursday, with a spot in Saturday's championship game on the line. The Chargers and Panthers will face off at 10 a.m. on Friday at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
