Box Score The Hillsdale College women's basketball team never found its rhythm offensively in a tough road loss at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday night, shooting just 31.7% from the floor in a 68-44 loss to the Panthers.
The Chargers got off to encouraging start in the contest, scoring baskets on their first three possessions, including a pair of makes by sophomore
Magdalena Sularski. It didn't last, as Hillsdale fell into a four-minute long dry spell while Kentucky Wesleyan surged out to an 11-6 advantage, and ended up taking a 21-14 lead out of the period after hitting four of five 3-point attempts.
Hillsdale closed the gap to four points on a Sularski 3-pointer early in the second period, and again to six points later in the quarter, but the Chargers simply couldn't string enough positive possessions together to stay in striking distance with the Panthers. KWC took a 12-point edge into halftime and pulled away further in the second half.
Shooting and turnovers were the story of the game. Hillsdale shot just 1 of 17 from 3-point range, while KWC buried 7 of their 18 attempts from beyond the arc. The Chargers also struggled to hold onto the ball, committing 27 turnovers that the Panthers turned into 23 points at the other end.
Savannah Smith led the Chargers with 11 points and five rebounds,
Ellie Bruce chipped in nine points, five rebounds and two blocks, and
Magdalena Sularski added nine points as well.
Annalise Pietrzyk finished with seven points and four rebounds for Hillsdale.
The Chargers fall to 7-4 overall, 3-2 in the G-MAC and will look to move past tonight's loss with another tough road game on tap in Kentucky on Saturday, as Hillsdale takes on Thomas More at 1 p.m. The Saints handed Northwood its first G-MAC loss on Thursday to create a three-way tie at the top of the standings between the Timberwolves, Thomas More and Kentucky Wesleyan. Hillsdale, a game back of that group, will look to keep pace with the leaders in G-MAC play by getting back on track against the Saints.Â
