Preview: Several potential title-winners for Hillsdale at 2026 G-MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

Big things could be in store this weekend for the Hillsdale College men's and women's track and field teams.

The Chargers travel to Ashland for the 2026 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, and with seven Hillsdale athletes currently ranked in the top eight in the nation in their respective events, both teams should have a big impact on the proceedings on Friday and Saturday.

The meet will determine the indoor track and field conference champions, both team and individual, as well as all-conference honors. It also serves as the final chance for athletes to hit their best marks of the season and potentially earn a spot in the NCAA DII Indoor Championships in March.

Hillsdale enters 2026 looking to improve on its team finishes in 2025. The Charger men placed seventh in the conference with a lone champion -- Ben Haas, who won his third straight title in the weight throw -- while the women took third with four conference titles.

The Charger men could be in line for a breakout. Haas returns looking for his fourth-straight weight throw title and is the overwhelming favorite in the event as not only the defending conference but also defending NCAA DII national champion in the discipline. He has the top mark in the country in the event currently, and will also be a threat to win the shot put title, entering this weekend ranked second on the performance list.

Haas' top competition in the weight throw could be his own teammate, as freshman Dominic Scharer is ranked second in the event for the Chargers, and gives Hillsdale a shot at big points in the throws.

The Chargers also have a strong distance crew to lean on. Senior Ross Kuhn is the favorite in the men's mile, with the top time among all competitors this season, while fellow senior Gabriel Phillips is in the top five on the performance list in both the 3,000m and 5,000m run. One dark horse to watch for the Chargers in the jumps is senior Alfonso Garcia, who has never scored in an indoor championship for Hillsdale previously, but made a big leap up the standings with a new personal best jump this season and is currently fifth on the performance list entering the meet.

On the women's side, Hillsdale will look to challenge defending champion Ashland with a lineup of heavy hitters. Three of Hillsdale's four defending conference champions from 2025 return, and the Chargers hold the top overall seed in six events entering the meet.

One of the top contenders for Hillsdale is sophomore Allison Kuzma, who was the G-MAC champion in the 5K indoors last season and an All-American in the 10K outdoors, as well as an All-American in cross country this past fall. Kuzma is the top seed in both the 5K and 3K and will try to become a double champion for the Chargers after finishing second in the 3K last season. Also returning to defend a 2025 title is senior Tara Townsend, a 2025 outdoor All-American in the pole vault who is the top seed in the G-MAC indoors in the event, and sophomore Baelyn Zitzmann, who is the top seed in the pentathlon and looking to repeat as a G-MAC champion in that event.

Hillsdale also has a strong sprint crew, headlined by freshman phenom Anna Roessner, who set the G-MAC record earlier this season in the 60m dash and enters the weekend as the top seed in the event, and seeded third in the 200m dash as well. She's not the only Charger who could score big points in the sprints, as senior Lucy Minning is seeded fifth in the 200 and will push Roessner in both races, while sophomore Sarah Chappelle is seeded fifth in the 60m hurdles and senior Francesca Federici is seeded fifth in the 400m dash as well for the Chargers.

The Chargers also could score big points in the throws. Sophomore Amelia Lutz is the top seed and one of the best in the country in the shot put, while freshman teammate Sofia Boonzaaijer ranks third and could give the Chargers huge points in the event. The Chargers have several contenders in the weight throw too, as sophomore Olivia Newsome is seeded third and freshman Tori Tyo is seeded fifth to pace four potential scorers for Hillsdale in the event.

Other top five seeds for Hillsdale with strong scoring chances this weekend include junior Eleanor Clark in the 3K, freshman Adella Schmoll in the long jump, and Hillsdale's 4x400m relay team.
