Matt Schepel joins the Hillsdale College baseball staff for the 2026-27 season as an assistant coach, where he will work primarily with the Chargers’ outfielders and hitters. He brings more than a decade of coaching experience at both the collegiate and high school levels, along with a decorated playing career at Calvin University.
Before arriving in Hillsdale, Schepel spent six seasons as a high school head coach, first at East Grand Rapids High School and then at Kenowa Hills High School. In 2025, he guided Kenowa Hills to the Division 1 regional finals and was named District Coach of the Year.
Schepel began his coaching career at his alma mater, Calvin University, where he served as an assistant coach from 2015 to 2018. Working with the Knights’ outfielders and hitters, he helped produce some of the most prolific offenses in program history. During his tenure, Calvin set single-season school records for hits and doubles and posted the second-highest team batting average in program history.
As a player, Schepel was a four-year standout at Calvin. He earned All-MIAA honors all four seasons and was named First Team All-Region as a senior. He finished his career as Calvin’s all-time leader in hits, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, runs scored, RBI, and walks.
Schepel resides in Hillsdale with his wife, Brianna, who serves as head coach of the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team.
