Since the start of the 2012 season, the only GLIAC team with a perfect record against the Hillsdale College volleyball program is Ferris State. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that record stayed intact Saturday afternoon.
After opening the match with an impressive 25-18 win over FSU, the Bulldogs battled back, using their powerful front line to pick up a 3-1 win over the Chargers at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. Hillsdale is now 7-8 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC.
The Chargers will head to Aurora, Illinois next weekend to participate in the annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament at the Great Lakes Center. The Chargers' opponents will be determined early Sunday evening.
In set one, Hillsdale played the kind of high-level volleyball it displayed during its five-match winning streak last month, with the offense generating 17 kills and a .486 hitting percentage. But Ferris State, the defending Midwest Regional champions, fought back to win the final three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-16. The flow of the action in those three sets indicated a match much more closely played than the scores indicated, thanks to superb defensive coverage by both teams on many rallies.
Hillsdale's 70 digs in the match were its third-most this season and most in a four-set contest. Three players had 15 or more digs, led by 18 from junior Jordan Denmark, who was all over the court defensively, trying to counter Ferris State's heavy hitters. Junior setter Marissa Owen had 16 digs to go along with 39 assists and two block assists, while freshman Brittany Jandasek dug up 15 balls.
Offensively, junior Haylee Booms was outstanding with 13 kills, no errors and a .565 hitting percentage. Junior Emily Wolfert had 12 kills and hit .241, while Lindsay Kostrzewa and Erin Holsinger each had 6 kills.
