Huge Comeback Sparks Hillsdale to Crossover Win over UIndy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Missouri-St. Louis 3, Hillsdale 1

Hillsdale 3, Indianapolis 2

McKendree 3, Hillsdale 1

No team has enjoyed as much success in the seven years of the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover as Hillsdale College. Some of that skill and experience came through in a big way Saturday.

The Chargers (8-10) rallied from am 0-2 deficit to shock the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 3-2 at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Friday, Hillsdale took a 3-1 loss at the hands of Missouri-St. Louis.

The big key to the comeback over UIndy was blocking. Through two sets, Hillsdale as a team had just two total blocks. In the final three, all Charger wins, they generated nine total blocks as a team to finish with 11, one of their best single-match totals of the season.

UIndy won the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19. Hillsdale came back to post wins of 25-23, 26-24 and 15-7. The Chargers used a 9-0 run in set five to build an insurmountable 13-3 lead. This is the second year in a row Hillsdale has defeated Indianapolis at the crossover tournament.

Four different players had 10 or more kills for the Chargers, led by a career-high 17 by junior Jordan Denmark. Sophomore Erin Holsinger had the match-clinching kill and had 13 in the match. Junior Emily Wolfert was powerfully efficient with 11 kills against just two errors. Senior middle hitter Lindsay Kostrzewa had 10 kills and hit .643 for the match.

Junior Haylee Booms had two solo blocks and two block assists, while Holsinger had five block assists. Junior setter Marissa Owen had a big match with 40 assists and 17 digs. Freshman Jessie Kopmeyer added 10 digs.

Later Saturday, the Chargers fell to one of the GLVC's most improved teams, McKendree, 3-1. This was a tight one all the way, with Hillsdale losing in set 1 25-21 before winning set 2 25-22. The Bearcats won the final two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.

Wolfert led the Chargers with 13 kills, while Booms added 10. Owen had another 40-assist match, and junior Jenalle Beaman (pictured) had a team-high 17 digs.

Friday, Hillsdale took a 1-0 lead over Missouri-St. Louis, but ended up losing a 3-1 decision. Hillsdale won set 1 25-21, and lost set 2 26-24 on a tough lift call when the set was tied at 24. UMSL took advantage of the break and won set 3 25-11 and closed out the Chargers 25-21 in set 4.

Denmark had 13 kills and a .256 hitting percentage, while Wolfert and Kostrzewa each picked up 11 kills for the Chargers in the loss.
