After a rough road trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula last weekend, the Hillsdale College volleyball team was tasked with going back on the road this weekend to face two more GLIAC North Division foes. Friday night's result was much better for the Chargers.
After playing a dynamite first set, Hillsdale went through a back-and-forth battle with Wayne State University, eventually winning the match 3-1 at the Matthaie Center in Detroit. Hillsdale is now 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the GLIAC, and will face Saginaw Valley State University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Chargers stormed out of the gate in this one, winning set one 25-14 while committing just one hitting error. The team's .522 hitting percentage in the set is much more along the lines of how it played when sweeping five straight opponents at home to open conference play.
But in set 2, the team's U.P. struggles returned as the Warriors whipped the Chargers 25-16. Hillsdale came through with some excellent play in the clutch in the third and fourth sets, winning them by scores of 25-22 and 27-25.
Junior Emily Wolfert, normally a go-to offensive player, was all over the court defensively for Hillsdale, recording a career-high 19 digs to go along with 9 kills, 2 service aces and 2 total blocks.
Junior Jordan Denmark got off to a fast start, picking up 5 of her team-high 10 kills in the first set. Junior Haylee Booms added 8 kills and 5 total blocks for the Chargers.
This match was marked by an unusually high number of whistles for double contacts and ball handling errors by teams on both sides of the net. In 11 matches prior to this one, Hillsdale and its opponents had been called for a combined total of 31 ball handling errors. In this match alone, the Chargers and Warriors were called for 14 ball handling errors.
Denmark and freshman Brittany Jandasek each had 14 digs, and junior setter Marissa Owen handed out 33 assists and 6 digs for the Chargers.
