On a festive Halloween Night, the Hillsdale College volleyball team put together one of its best efforts in some time in earning a key win over Malone University.
The Chargers had their best hitting percentage in a GLIAC match in six weeks in a 3-0 victory over the Pioneers. The win improves Hillsdale to 10-12 overall and 8-7 in conference play. The win moves Hillsdale one game behind Malone, but the Chargers now hold the all-important tiebreaker over the Pioneers, should the conference standings come down to that.
Hillsdale is currently the eighth-ranked team in the conference, and the top eight teams qualify for the postseason tournament.
Many of the more than 500 fans came dressed up in their Halloween costumes, and the Chargers were able to put on an excellent performance for the lively crowd. Hillsdale won the sets by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20. Hillsdale had a .267 team hitting percentage, led by junior ace Haylee Booms.
The right-side hitter had another dominating performance, with 10 kills, 5 block assists and a .500 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Denmark matched Booms' .500 hitting percentage, and put down a match-high 11 kills. Combined, Booms and Denmark had 21 kills and 2 errors on 36 total attempts, giving setter Marissa Owen some reliable targets for her sets.
Owen had 38 assists and 8 digs, while senior middle hitter Lindsay Kostrzewa had 4 kills and 6 block assists. The Chargers dominated play at the net, outblocking the Pioneers 10-2 in the match.
Hillsdale plays its final home match of the season at 5 p.m. Saturday against Walsh University.
