The 2014 Hillsdale College volleyball season came to a conclusion Wednesday night in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
After two competitive sets, the Ferris State University Bulldogs stormed past the Chargers in the third set, 25-10, winning the match 3-0. Hillsdale's season ends with a 12-14 overall record, its first losing season since 2002. The Bulldogs, now 21-5, move on to the tournament semifinals this weekend at Grand Valley State.
Hillsdale held leads in each of the first two sets, but ended up losing 25-20 and 25-19. The third set saw the bottom fall out, as the Chargers had 5 kills and 13 errors as a team, which added up to a hitting percentage of -.235. That high number of errors meant the Bulldogs only needed to generate 8 kills on offense to score their 25 points in that set.
Ferris State had a .288 hitting percentage and committed no serve reception erros, compared to .029 and 6 reception errors committed by the Chargers. FSU, a big and strong team, also outblocked Hillsdale 10-3.
Junior Haylee Booms had her best season in 2014, and finished on a positive note with a team-bets 8 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Senior Lindsay Kostrzewa had 7 kills and 1 block in her final collegiate match.
Junior Marissa Owen handed out 24 assists and pulled up 5 digs. Junior Jordan Denmark led the team with 12 digs in the match.
