From the beginning, it just wasn't Hillsdale's day.
The Tiffin University Dragons men's basketball team led Sunday's non-conference game from start to finish in a 79-63 decision in Quincy, Illinois. The game was the second of the two-day QU Subway Holiday Classic. Since this was a tournament game, it does not count in either teams' GLIAC record.
Hillsdale is 5-3 on the season and heads to Canton, Ohio right after the new year, facing Walsh University on Jan. 2.
Tiffin never trailed in this game, and nailed five of its first seven attempts from 3-point territory to open up a big lead early in the game. The Chargers had a couple of runs in them, but could not sustain enough offense, coupled with enough defensive stops to narrow the margin beyond seven points.
Redshirt-freshman guard Stedman Lowry had a big ballgame, achieving career-highs in both points (18) and 3-pointers made (6). He was 6-for-12 from beyond the arc, making five of those shots in the first half.
The Dragons shot 10 percentage points better than the Chargers from the floor, and held a 15-7 edge from the free throw line. The Dragons also outrebounded Hillsdale 33-29 and committed just two turnovers, not giving Hillsdale any kind of easy offense during the game.
Junior forward Kyle Cooper had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
