The Hillsdale College volleyball team has yet to lose a single set in GLIAC play in 2014. A new peak may have been reached in the young season in a terrific performance Friday night.
The Chargers played with a remarkable calm from start to finish in a 3-0 sweep over Northwood University before more than 400 fans in the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. Hillsdale is now 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC, and will play at home once again Saturday night against Lake Superior State University.
Hillsdale showed few weaknesses in picking up its first victory over the Timberwolves since November 2011, halting a four-match losing streak in the series. The Chargers had a season-best .371 team hitting percentage in the win, generating 41 kills against just 8 errors as a team. Hillsdale won set one in dominating fashion 25-11, and took the other two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19.
One of the team's top all-around performers was junior Jordan Denmark, who was simply outstanding on offense and defense.
Denmark had 6 kills with a .357 hitting percentage offensively. But on defense, Denmark was the best player on the floor Friday, as she came up with a match-high 18 digs. Beyond the high number of digs, most of them were turned into pinpoint passes, helping to set up junior setter Marissa Owen for a strong night from her position. Denmark was steady and spectacular, all in one performance.
Junior Emily Wolfert led the Charger offense with 13 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, while reigning South Division Player of the Week Haylee Booms was strong once again with 7 kills, a .429 hitting percentage and 3 block assists.
Owen had 35 assists on the night and junior Jenalle Beaman (pictured) added 5 kills on just 6 attempts, a night that included some well-placed kills from the back row. Senior Lindsay Kostrzewa contributed 5 kills and 3 block assists for Hillsdale.
