Playing at home has been quite agreeable to the Hillsdale College volleyball team.
After playing 12 straight matches on the road, the Chargers are in the midst of a four-match home stand. They won for the third straight time, this time in a 3-0 sweep over Wayne State University Friday night.
The Chargers are now 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the GLIAC, while WSU falls to 3-5 in conference play.
The two teams teamed up for a well-played opening set, won by Hillsdale 26-24. The Warriors did a nice job passing off Hillsdale's serves and kept the Chargers from sustaining much momentum in the set. An Emily Wolfert kill broke the 24-24 tie, and the Warriors committed an error that wrapped up the set.
Set two was all Hillsdale, as the Chargers raced out to leads of 6-0 and 12-2 on their way to a 25-10 win to go up 2-0. Wayne State struggled with running its offense in the second set, hitting -.226 for the set.
The Chargers came into the match ranked third in the nation in blocks per set, and put that strength to good use in the third set, winning 25-17. Hillsdale outblocked Wayne State 11-5 overall, with Erin Holsinger's 4 solo blocks leading the way.
Freshman Kara Vyletel was all over the court, playing with incredible athleticism and efficiency, leading the team with 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage. She also had 7 digs and passed extremely well off Wayne State's serves.
Wolfert had 9 kills and just 1 error along with 4 block assist, while freshman Paige VanderWall added 7 kills.
Senior Marissa Owen was also active defensively and had 17 assists while freshman Taylor Bennett added 16 assists. Senior Jenalle Beaman was outstanding along the back line with a team-high 15 digs, many of them very accurate passes to the team's sertters.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: The Chargers hit .435 in set 2 and committed 11 fewer attack errors than Wayne State in that one set…The Chargers hit .322 as a team compared to .019 for Wayne State in the match…Holsinger's 4 solo blocks are the most by a Charger this year...The team's 13 wins this season exceed the 12 wins notched by the program all of last season.
