Saturday night the Hillsdale College volleyball program honored its five graduating seniors on Senior Night. But it won't be the last time those Chargers play on their home court.
The Chargers concluded the 2015 regular season with their seventh straight win, 3-0 over visiting Lake Erie College, at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. The win clinched a home match in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the Chargers, which will be played at 7:00 Wednesday against Saginaw Valley State.
Hillsdale won Saturday's three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-14. The team enters the postseason with an overall record of 22-6 and finishes conference play at 14-4.
Senior Haylee Booms, a First-Team All-GLIAC selection a year ago, channeled the emotion of Senior Night into an outstanding match, leading the Chargers with 12 kills and a .476 hitting percentage. She attacked the ball with power, purpose and accuracy the entire match.
A strong characteristic of this year's team has been its offensive balance and that was illustrated in this match. Four players had between 8 and 12 kills, with freshman Kara Vyletel (nine), junior Erin Holsinger (eight) and senior Emily Wolfert (six) taking turns making big plays on offense. Wolfert contributed 7 block assists in the win.
Sophomore libero Brittany Jandasek continued her strong play to end the regular season with a team-best 18 digs. Senior Jordan Denmark added 12 digs and 4 kills.
Senior Marissa Owen added to her terrific season with 19 assists and 7 digs, while freshman Taylor Bennett added 17 assists and 5 digs.
