A long month on the road came to a happy conclusion for the Hillsdale College volleyball team.
The road-weary Chargers fell behind the host Ohio Dominican University Panthers, but rallied back for a 3-1 win in Columbus Saturday afternoon. The win is Hillsdale's ninth in a row on the road and 15th in a row overall, improving its record to 22-3 overall and 12-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Panthers had a .351 hitting percentage in the opening set, topping the Chargers 25-21. After Hillsdale tweaked its lineup a bit, it got back on track, capturing the final three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21.
ODU's defense played hard in this match with 70 digs as a team, and four players had between 12 and 20 digs, making the Charger offense work hard for every point. But Hillsdale's defense was up to the task, holding the Panthers to a .105 hitting percentage over the match's final two sets. The Chargers outblocked the Panthers 9-2, with a nice spark provided by sophomore middle hitter Veronica O'Connor.
O'Connor set new career-highs with 3 solo blocks and 2 block assists in her three sets played.
Junior Paige VanderWall was all over the court once again, getting 13 kills and 16 digs with a .433 hitting percentage. VanderWall has five matches this season with at least 7 kills and 0 hitting errors.
Senior Jackie Langer also picked up a double-double, matching her season-high with 15 kills to go with 11 digs and 3 block assists. Freshman middle hitter Allyssa Van Wienen finished off a terrific weekend with 10 kills, 2 digs and 3 block assists. Sophomore libero Taylor Wiese led the team with 19 digs while freshman Madie Schider set a new career-high with 4 service aces for the Chargers.
