Saturday > Friday.
At least that's how the Hillsdale College volleyball team sees it today. After losing a frustrating 3-1 decision to Cedarville Friday night, the Chargers bounced back with a tidy 3-0 win over Ohio Dominican University Saturday at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena. It is Hillsdale's first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference win, and improves the team to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
For a while, Friday night's struggles carried over into Saturday's match. Ohio Dominican held a 12-11 lead in the first set, but the Chargers rediscovered their typical level of play after that.
Hillsdale finished set 1 on a 7-0 run to win 25-15. Another 7-0 run opened set 2 thanks to the aggressive serving of sophomore Taylor Wiese and kills from three different players during the run. Hillsdale would win set 2 25-12 and closed out the victory with a 25-17 win in set 3. Seven of Hillsdale's eight wins this season have come by 3-0 sweeps.
Freshman Maddie Clark set a new career-high in kills for the second time in a week, producing the best match of her young career against the Panthers. She put down 9 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, 2 digs and a solo block. Clark showed good power, and is emerging as one of many talented young players on the Charger roster.
Junior Paige VanderWall had another efficient match with 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage, to go along with 9 digs. Freshman Allyssa Van Wienen had 7 kills, hit .500 and had 4 block assists. Junior Kara Vyletel added 11 kills with a .429 hitting percentage in a terrific performance.
Freshman setter Lindsey Mertz guided the team to a .386 hitting percentage with 31 assists and 4 digs, and Wiese's 11 digs led the team.
Hillsdale hits the road next weekend for its first trip to Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca Nazarene to continue G-MAC play.
