#7/#3 Chargers fall to Ferris St. in Midwest Regional clash, 89-58

Box Score

The #7/#3 Hillsdale College men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with visiting Ferris State offensively in an 89-58 loss on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs, currently unranked but fifth in the Midwest Region in D2SIDA's regional poll and considered one of the top contenders in the Midwest, outscored Hillsdale 45-22 in the second half to stretch out an eight-point halftime lead. Ferris St. knocked down 16 3-pointers and shot better from behind the arc (57.1%) than they did from the floor (53.7%) to run away with the contest.

Hillsdale, meanwhile, struggled to generate offense, shooting just 35.4% from the floor and 24% from beyond the arc with six made 3-pointers. The Chargers got to the line more effectively than Ferris, with 12 free throw attempts to Ferris' four, but shot uncharacteristically poorly from the charity stripe, making just 50% of their attempts from the line.

Junior forward Patrick Cartier led the Chargers again with 19 points and six rebounds, and junior guard Jack Gohlke hit four of Hillsdale's six 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 13 points off the bench. But in a game where Ferris had four players in double figures and two more with nine points, the Chargers couldn't get anyone else going offensively in the contest.

Junior Kyle Goessler chipped in seven points, junior Cole Nau added six points and three assists, and senior Austen Yarian finished with five points, six rebounds and four assists as well. Junior Tavon Brown led the Chargers in rebounding with nine and also chipped in four points.

Hillsdale (2-1) will look to rebound this weekend against another tough Midwest Region foe from the GLIAC, Wayne St. The Chargers travel to Detroit to face the Warriors at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, before returning home on Tuesday, Nov. 23 for a 7 p.m. tip with Lewis heading into the Thanksgiving break.
