Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers fall behind early in 86-69 loss to Winona St. in neutral site contest

The Hillsdale College men's basketball team took its first loss of the season on Saturday, as the Chargers fell behind a hot-shooting start by opponent Winona State and couldn't catch up in a 86-69 loss in a neutral site game played in DeSimone Arena on the Wisconsin Parkside college campus.

Winona State knocked down three 3-pointers early to race out to a 13-4 lead less than six minutes in, and kept the pedal to the floor throughout, answering a Hillsdale run with a 6-0 run of their own to stretch the lead to double-digits with 7:58 to play in the first half and taking a 17 point lead into halftime. The Chargers were unable to get the stops they needed to meaningfully cut into the lead in the second half, falling in the end by a 17-point margin.

Hillsdale lost despite a strong game from senior Charles Woodhams, who played 37 minutes and finished with a 21 point, 12 rebound double-double on 8 of 10 shooting from the floor while also chipped in three assists. Logan Beaston knocked down three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points as well for the Chargers, and Mikey McCollum added 11 points off the bench. Senior Joe Reuter chipped in seven points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks as well for Hillsdale.

The Chargers played Winona State relatively even in most statistical categories but couldn't overcome a superlative shooting performance by the Warriors, who shot 54.5% from the floor, 42.9% from deep and 94.4% on 18 free throws to control the game.

Hillsdale (5-1) will look to bounce back on Wednesday with a tough road trip to regional foe Grand Valley State for a 3 p.m. contest just ahead of Thanksgiving.
