The #15/21 Hillsdale College men's basketball team put together one of its most efficient offensive efforts of the season in a big road victory on Saturday, rolling past defending G-MAC Tournament champion Walsh 79-55 to improve to 9-1 overall.
The Chargers shot 64% from the floor, 72.7% in the second half, in a display of shooting excellence that gave the host Cavaliers no chance to keep pace. Hillsdale's 64% shooting from the floor is the Chargers' best mark since a 66.1% showing in a 95-63 win over Tiffin on Jan. 6, 2023, nearly two full seasons ago.
Hillsdale seized the lead for good three minutes into the game on a 3-pointer by
Charles Woodhams, and pulled away with a 9-0 run leading 15-11 in the first half, including another 3-pointer by
Mikey McCollum.
The Chargers led by 13 at the half and came out on fire to start the second, scoring the first eight points of the period on four straight possessions to bury the Cavaliers for good. Walsh kept the score from getting worse but was unable to meaningfully cut into Hillsdale's lead the rest of the way.
Hillsdale's efficient night was a team effort, as five Chargers finished with double figures, led by senior
Joe Reuter, who scored 14 points and chipped in four rebounds as well. Senior center
Eric Radisevic had an impressive contest against a small Walsh lineup, shooting 85.7% from the floor with 13 points and five rebounds in just 16 minutes of action, junior
Ashton Janowski chipped in 12 points and four assists, and Woodhams and McCollum each added 10.
Post players
Caleb Glaser and
CJ Yarian also made their presences felt off the bench for the Chargers, as Glaser chipped in eight points and Yarian finished with seven points and 11 rebounds in a big night for Hillsdale's centers.
While Hillsdale's offense was impressive on their road, it was backed by another strong defensive effort for the Chargers, who held a high-scoring Walsh squad to just 32.8% shooting from the floor and 23.1% from 3-point range in a smothering performance. Taking advantage of their size, the Chargers held Walsh to just 14 points in the paint in the contest.
Hillsdale is now 9-1 overall, 3-0 in G-MAC play and one of just three remaining unbeaten teams in the conference along with surging Findlay and defending G-MAC regular season champion Kentucky Wesleyan. The Chargers face another road trip on Monday night, as Hillsdale travels to rival Northwood for a G-MAC contest at 7 p.m. looking to keep pace with other contenders at the top of the league standings.
