So far this season, junior
Robert Thompson has produced what is inarguably the best three-invitational run in modern Hillsdale College men's golf history.
That impressive stretch of play has brought in another honor for the junior from Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday, as Thompson was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference's Men's Golf Athlete of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
The award was a result of Thompson's second medalist honor in three invitationals this season, as he birdied the final hole of the Midwest Collegiate this past Tuesday to beat Illinois-Springfield's Peyton Woods and Tiffin's Mitchell Brassard by a single stroke to finish with a six-under 210.
Thompson dominated the course at Rock Hollow Golf Club, shooting under par for all three rounds and finishing as the only player in the field to post top five in scoring on Par 3s, Par 4s and Par 5s. It's the second medalist honor this season for Thompson, who also won the Malone-Glenmoor Fall Classic at the start of September with an 8-under 208. His third tournament so far was no slouch, either, as Thompson posted a top 10 finish at the UIndy Invitational with another 8-under 208. For the season so far, Thompson has been under par in seven of the nine rounds he's played and currently sits at 22-under for the campaign.
The Chargers and Thompson will look to stay hot at the Findlay Country Club this coming Monday, as Hillsdale plays against another tough regional field at the Doc Spragg Invitational on Oct. 13 and 14 for its next event.
