Chargers upset by Tiffin in five set slugfest

The Hillsdale College volleyball team took a tough road loss on Friday night, as the Chargers couldn't hold a 2-1 lead in a five set loss at Tiffin.

The Chargers entered the night still hoping for a top four G-MAC finish and a potential home quarterfinal game, and after splitting the first two sets with the host Dragons, seemed to be about to keep their hopes alive with a dominant 25-14 third set win.

Hillsdale was up 17-14 in the fourth set looking to close out the match, but Tiffin flipped the script on the Chargers with a 6-0 run, turning a three-point deficit into a 20-17 lead. The Chargers briefly closed the gap but never led again in the set as the Dragons won 25-21 to force a fifth set.

That fifth set would also belong to Tiffin, as Hillsdale never led and was never tied past the first two points. The Chargers battled to the end, fighting off one match point and closing to 14-13 late, but Tiffin got the kill it needed to take down the Chargers 15-13 and take the match.

Though not by huge margins, Hillsdale was outhit 57 kills to 49, outblocked 14 to 13, and outaced 6 to 5, enough to give the Dragons the slim edge they needed in the match.

Grace Drake posted a 12 kill, 13 dig double-double with seven assists for the Chargers, while Ellie Fles and Adi Sysum each chipped in eight kills for the Chargers. Sysum also chipped in three total blocks and Caroline Lanicek and Jenna Southland each added five total blocks as well for Hillsdale.

Chloe Pierce led Hillsdale defensively with 23 digs and added eight assists, and Emory Braswell chipped in 18 digs and finished with six kills. Josie TeSlaa led Hillsdale in assists (25) and aces (two) while also adding 15 digs.

Hillsdale is now 12-11 overall, 10-4 in the G-MAC, and finishes the regular season with a match at G-MAC North Division champion Findlay tomorrow, Saturday, at 4 p.m.
