The Hillsdale College men's basketball team took a tough road loss on Wednesday in Indianapolis, falling victim to an early run by host UIndy in a 71-59 loss.
The Chargers started strong, holding the Greyhounds in check offensively and taking a 15-10 lead 10 minutes into the game on a 3-pointer by
Tommy Morgan. From there, however, UIndy seized control with a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes that turned Hillsdale's lead into a double-digit deficit. The Chargers managed to stay in the game with a solid finish to the half, trailing 30-21 at the break, but sharp shooting by the Greyhounds kept Hillsdale from cutting the deficit to closer than seven points in the second half.
Trailing by 18 at the under eight timeout, Hillsdale made one final, push, fueled by
Caleb Glaser, who scored six points off the bench in the minutes of the game, and a 3-pointer from
Cole McWhinnie. The Chargers trailed by just eight with 3:34 to play, but just as Hillsdale was putting UIndy's lead under real threat, the Greyhounds his a clutch 3-pointer to extend the lead back to double digits and pull away.
Hillsdale outrebounded UIndy 38-34 and stayed in contact thanks in part to 16 second chance points, but the Greyhounds were more efficient offensively, shooting 47.2% from the floor to Hillsdale's 35%. The Greyhounds achieved the superior shooting percentage by pushing the tempo, getting easy baskets in transition with 15 fast break points.
Ashton Janowski led Hillsdale with 14 points, three assists and two steals, while Glaser chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in a strong performance off the bench for the Chargers. Morgan added nine points and three steals,
Garrett Bolte finished with seven points and
CJ Yarian added 10 rebounds as well.
The Chargers are now 2-3 overall and will be off for Thanksgiving weekend, before returning to the court next week to open G-MAC play with a trip to Malone on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.. After playing the Pioneers, Hillsdale will return to the friendly confines of Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena to battle Lake Erie in a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 6.
