Season Recap: Kuzma's All-American honors cap solid season for Chargers cross country

The Hillsdale College men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up their seasons in November with strong performances on the regional and national stage to cap the 2025 campaign.

Impressive individual performances highlighted the Chargers' 2025 season. On the women's side, sophomore Allison Kuzma was sensational, ranking in the top 20 nationally as an individual all season long, and becoming the third Charger woman in three seasons to capture the individual G-MAC cross country crown with a 6K time of 20:29.1 at the G-MAC Championships in October in Mindland, Michigan.

Kuzma followed that performance with an impressive runner-up finish at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional in Kenosha, punching a ticket to her first NCAA DII cross country national meet. On the national stage, Kuzma ran an excellent race to become the 21st Charger woman to earn All-American honors in cross country, placing 13th in the nation in 20:38.7. With nine of the 12 finishers ahead of her graduating this spring, the sophomore is in excellent position to shoot for even bigger things in 2026. Kuzma already has an impressive set of accolades, including two G-MAC titles and an All-American honor in the 10K in track and field to go with her cross country accomplishments this fall.

On the men's side, Gabriel Phillips had a stellar senior season to lead the Chargers. Phillips became the first Hillsdale man in recent memory and potentially the first in program history to break the 24 minute mark in a cross country 8K race with a time of 23:54.2 in the 8K at the Louisville Classic in October. Phillips continued to excel in championship season, placing third behind two eventual All-Americans at the G-MAC Championships in October, and finishing 10th in the Midwest Regional with a stellar 10K time of 30:42.5 to earn All-Region honors. While Phillips was unlucky not to be selected to compete in the NCAA DII Championships, his performance bodes well for what is sure to be strong indoor and outdoor track and field campaigns.

As a team, the Charger women placed fourth in the G-MAC and 11th in the Midwest Region. Along with Kuzma, junior Eleanor Clark had a breakout season, earning first team All-Conference honors and just missing All-Region honors with new personal bests to close the campaign. The future is bright for the Charger women, as all of the Chargers top seven from the 2025 Midwest Regional are set to return in 2026, and that doesn't include Savannah Fraley, a two-time All-G-MAC honoree who battled injuries in 2025 but should return healthy next fall.

On the men's side, the Chargers ran a tough race to try and defend their 2024 G-MAC crown but ended up finishing fifth in the conference in a tight race at the top, before placing 11th at the Midwest Regional. Along with Phillips, junior Caleb Youngstedt earned repeat All-G-MAC honors and looks set to be a team leader next season, while the encouraging performance of freshmen John Richardson and Jefferson Regitz in their first collegiate seasons give Hillsdale a solid core to build around as Hillsdale hopes for a stronger team finish in 2026.
