Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Chargers dominate Kentucky Wesleyan, 77-44, on Alumni Day

On a day when Hillsdale College women's basketball greats were in the house, the current iteration of the Chargers put on a show.

Hillsdale steamrolled visiting Kentucky Wesleyan 77-44 for the Chargers' third straight victory and 11th in their last 12 outings, never trailing and leading by double digits or more for most of the contest.

The Chargers seized control early, opening the game on an 11-0 run in the first five minutes, and never let the Panthers get closer than seven points the rest of the way. Leading by 13 at the half, Hillsdale put to rest any drama by outscoring KWC 21-11 in the third quarter and putting the game well out of reach.

Hillsdale rolled to victory by dominating the paint, as Hillsdale's center tandem of sophomore Savannah Smith and freshman Ellie Bruce each scored 12 points in the victory, with Bruce adding three blocks as well. The Chargers outrebounded the Panthers by a massive 57-33 margin, including 14 offensive rebounds, and held a 44-28 edge over KWC in points in the paint.

Senior Caitlin Splain, fresh off reaching 1,000 points for her career on Thursday night, knocked down three 3-pointers and led the way with 15 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Annalise Pietrzyk added 11 points off the bench as well. Lauren McDonald filled up the stat sheet as well for the Chargers with seven points, eight assists and seven rebounds, and Kendall McCormick added seven points and 11 rebounds as well.

The Chargers shot 47.1% from 3-point range and dominated defensively, holding KWC to just 27.5% shooting from the floor and 13% shooting from 3-point range in a stellar performance.

Hillsdale improves to 14-6 overall and 11-2 in G-MAC play, two games behind G-MAC leader Malone and two ahead of fourth place Findlay and Northwood. The Chargers sit comfortably in third place as they prepare to embark on a long and difficult road trip to Kentucky next week, where Hillsdale will play a dangerous Thomas More team on Thursday before a rematch with the Panthers on their home court on Saturday.
