Chargers ride Game 2 shutout to series split with Malone

The Hillsdale College baseball team split a pair of shutouts with host Malone on Saturday, falling 2-0 in the opener and rallying for a 10-0 win in the nightcap to start the G-MAC season 2-2.

The Chargers just couldn't get going offensively in the first game of the day, managing just three hits and five total baserunners in a shutout loss. Malone fared little better at the plate, with just four hits, but took advantage of two walks and a hit by pitch to pull ahead in the fourth inning, and added an insurance run with a solo home run in the sixth.

Jacob Pallo (1-3) took the loss for the Chargers, striking out two and walking two in three and two-thirds innings of work on short rest, and Patrick MacLean finished the final two and two thirds innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Motivated by the tough loss, Hillsdale's bats came back with a vengeance in the nightcap, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits to blank the Pioneers and return the favor.

The Chargers got on the board early in game two, as Rocco Tenuta followed up a leadoff walk in the top of the firts by Tyler Sowers with a two-run home run that gave Hillsdale a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Hillsdale piled on with six runs on four hits in the top of the third to pull away, including a two run single by Billy Porotsky. Max French also drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch, Tenuta drew a bases-loaded walk, and Zak Kent hit a sacrifice fly to add to the damage and put the game out of reach early.

Will Lehman put the icing on the cake for the Chargers with a two-run double in the top of the eighth.

Zak Kent and Gaard Swenson each finished with three hits for the Chargers to lead the way offensively, and Brandon Scott was excellent on the mound, throwing a three-hitter with six strikeouts in six innings to earn his second win of the season. Winston Delp pitched a spotless final two innings with two strikeouts, no walks and no hits allowed to complete the shutout.

The Chargers are now 8-11 overall, 2-2 in G-MAC play and hit the road again on Saturday, March 22 to take on Ohio Dominican looking to get above .500 in the conference against the Panthers, who lost a pair of games to Tiffin in their G-MAC opener this Saturday.
