The Hillsdale College baseball team got a big split at home on Friday, handing Northwood just their second conference loss on the season in a 6-1 nightcap victory to kick off a four game set with the Timberwolves.
Hillsdale jumped on Northwood early in the nightcap, as
Will Lehman blasted a two-run home run with two outs to score
Rocco Tenuta and give the Chargers all the runs they would need in the first inning.Â
Gibson Cary (3-2) earned a complete game victory for the Chargers in a masterful performance, holding the G-MAC-leading Timberwolves offense to just one unearned run on four hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.
Cary retired the first seven batters he faced and faced real danger only once, working his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning to get the win on just 96 pitches.
Hillsdale added to its lead with a sacrifice fly by
Rocco Tenuta to score
Aaron Jasiak in the third inning, and responded to Northwood's only run in the game in the fifth with two more runs on a Timberwolves error and a sacrifice fly by
Gaard Swenson to score Jasiak again.
Will Millard put the finishing touches on offensively with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth, and
Tyler Turner got the game-ending out on a web gem line drive catch off of the pitcher's glove in the bottom of the seventh.
Jasiak had two hits for Hillsdale in the nightcap and Millard added a single and the home run to lead the Chargers at the plate.
In the opener, Hillsdale got a great start from ace
Daniel Higdon, who shut down Northwood for six innings with three strikeouts and just three hits conceded, but a costly error by Hillsdale led to three unearned runs in the top of the seventh by the Timberwolves in a 5-0 Northwood victory.Â
Hillsdale had runners in scoring position in five innings, including two runners in scoring positions in both the third and fourth innings, but couldn't find the timely hit it needed to get on board, stranding 11 runners in the contest.
Aaron Jasiak was 2 for 3 at the plate with a stolen base to lead the Chargers offensively.Â
Patrick MacLean (0-2) took the loss in relief for Hillsdale, and
Winston Delp also pitched an inning and two-thirds of relief for the Chargers in the loss.
Hillsdale is now 20-19 overall, 13-9 in G-MAC play and remains in third place both in the G-MAC North Division and fourth place overall. The Chargers have a big opportunity on Saturday with two more games against the Timberwolves starting at noon, as Hillsdale could become the first G-MAC team to take two games from Northwood with a split, or take the series entirely with a sweep.
