Chargers' G-MAC Tourney run ends in Pool B Final in 12-2 loss to Northwood

The Hillsdale College baseball team's lengthy G-MAC Tourney run came to an end on Friday afternoon, as the Chargers fell to top-seeded Northwood 12-2 in the Pool B final at Prasco Park.

The Chargers hung tight with the Timberwolves early in the game despite a depleted pitching staff, trailing just 2-1 halfway through the fourth inning thanks to a RBI single by Tyler Turner. But Northwood broke open the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning, and added seven more over the next four to end the contest early.

Hillsdale added another run in the top of the fifth inning, as senior Augie Hutchison scored on a fielder's choice after a leadoff single. It was one of three hits on the day for Hutchison to lead Hillsdale at the plate in the contest.

Senior relief pitcher Drew Erdei (0-2) took the loss despite a game effort on the mound, getting the start for a Chargers squad that had burned its four weekend starters to make it back through the elimination bracket and into the final against Northwood. Erdei pitched three solid innings to keep the Chargers close, but ran out of gas trying to stretch through a fourth inning. Daniel Higdon, Brenden Smith and Collin Lange all appeared in relief as well for the Chargers in the contest.

It's a tough ending for the Chargers, who finish the season at 26-28 overall, but the 2-2 finish matches Hillsdale's 2021 run for the best G-MAC Tourney performance since winning the title in 2018, and shows that the Chargers were playing some of their best ball at season's end.

Hillsdale graduates seven seniors, including lineup regulars Zak Kent and Hutchison and important pitchers in Brandon Scott, Andrew George and Erdei. But the Chargers are young overall, with seven freshmen or sophomore starters in the lineup and three freshman or sophomore pitchers in their starting rotation who all gained valuable tournament experience this season. With a great deal of talent slated to return next spring, the Chargers will aim to take another step forward and contend for the G-MAC crown next season.
