The Hillsdale College men's basketball team battled back from a 14-point second half deficit to tie the game, but came up short in a tough road loss at Tiffin, 60-56, on Saturday.
The Chargers trailed by double-digits for a significant part of the first half, and were behind 43-29 with 12:22 to go, but outscored Tiffin 23-9 over a nine and a half minute stretch to tie the game at 52 with 2:43 to play.
Ashton Janowski knocked down two 3-pointers to help key the run, and the Chargers did significant damage at the free throw line, going 10 of 13 on foul shots during that stretch.
Cole McWhinnie hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game and cap the run.
That gave Hillsdale a chance to take the win late, but the Chargers couldn't complete the comeback. Hillsdale was just 1 of 4 from the floor in the final two and a half minutes, and the free throw shooting that had gotten them back in the game deserted the Chargers late, as Hillsdale went 2 of 5 from the line down the stretch.
It was part of a difficult shooting night for the Chargers, who made just 30.2% of their shots from the floor. Hillsdale was able to hang in the game thanks to eight 3-pointers, 16 made free throws and a solid defensive effort.
Janowski led the Chargers with 16 points, including four made 3-pointers, and
Connor Stonebraker chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench as well for Hillsdale.
Garrett Bolte added six points and six rebounds for the Chargers,
Braylon Morris chipped in six points and two steals, and
CJ Yarian added five points, six rebounds and three blocks as well.Â
Hillsdale (7-10, 4-5 G-MAC) will play again on the road next Thursday, traveling to rival Findlay in a critical game for the Chargers as Hillsdale looks to stay in position to snag a G-MAC Tourney berth at season's end.
