Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers can't dig out of early hole in 71-51 road loss at #20 Walsh

A strong second half by the Hillsdale College men's basketball team wasn't enough to overcome a massive halftime deficit in a 71-51 road loss at 20th-ranked Walsh on Saturday.

Hillsdale outscored Walsh 38-30 after the break, but it couldn't match the 28-point deficit the Chargers faced at the end of the first half after a cold-shooting start left Hillsdale in a 41-13 hole.

Hillsdale shot 50% from the floor after the break and were 5 of 7 from beyond the arc, a huge improvement on a 16.7% shooting performance from the floor and an 0-10 showing from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Caleb Glaser, back from injury after missing Hillsdale's last two games, helped the Chargers find a rhythm offensively in the second half, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds. Guards Braylon Morris and Ashton Janowski also got going in the second half as well, with Morris finishing with 11 points and Janowski adding 10.

Tommy Morgan chipped in four steals for the Chargers and Cole McWhinnie added five assists.

Hillsdale struggled to deal with the nationally-ranked Cavaliers' inside presence, getting outrebounded 40-22 and scoring 18 points in the paint to Walsh's 34.

The Chargers are now 8-12 overall, 5-7 in the G-MAC, and face a critical home weekend as Hillsdale looks to separate itself from a tight pack battling for the eighth and final G-MAC Tournament seed. The Chargers play Tiffin on Thursday, Feb. 5 and then host Ohio Dominican on Feb. 7, and could put themselves in a strong position for the stretch run if it can pick up victories in both games.
