Ross Kuhn shatters Hillsdale's mile record in big weekend of action

Last spring, Ross Kuhn broke the Hillsdale College men's track and field 1,500m run record by a massive margin.

On Saturday, he did the same thing to the Chargers' indoor mile record.

Running in the fast heat of the prestigious Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame, Kuhn ran an impressive fifth in a race loaded with Division I and elite Division II talent, crossing the finish line in 4:02.42. That's nearly four full seconds faster than Hillsdale's previous mile record of 4:06.11, set in 2018 by All-American Joseph Humes. It's also the second fastest mile time in G-MAC history, behind only Dillan Haviland of Northwood.

The time also ranks 11th in the nation in NCAA DII currently, giving Kuhn, a 2025 outdoor All-American in the 1,500m, a real chance at qualifying for his first NCAA DII Indoor Championship meet this March.

Also at the Meyo Invitational, senior Ben Haas captured the invitational title and increased his nation-leading mark in the weight throw with a season-best effort of 21.91 meters. The defending NCAA DII national champion in the event, Haas is hoping for a big February as he chases a repeat title this spring.

Hillsdale also had several athletes competing at the Jet's Pizza Invite hosted by Saginaw Valley State. Matthew Belanich took fifth in the weight throw with a season-best effort of 17.77 meters, and Yahli Salzman placed 13th in the shot put with a throw of 14.18 meters as well.

On the track, freshman Wyatt Widolff ran a collegiate best time of 1:56.73 to finish 15th in the 800m dash, and Watson Magwenzi placed 11th in the 60m dash (7.00) and 17th in the 200m dash (22.26) as well. Zealand Tarrant placed 17th in the 400m dash in 50.10 for Hillsdale.

The Chargers now head into a huge weekend of meets. Hillsdale will split its squad between Allendale and the Mike Lints Alumni Meet hosted by Grand Valley State, and the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, hosted by the University of Michigan, with both squads hunting records and provisional marks with the G-MAC Championship meet looming a month from now.
