Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers let Walsh slip away late in 76-64 loss at home

The Hillsdale College men's basketball team hung with a tough Walsh squad for 30 minutes in a home contest on Monday night, but a late push by the Cavaliers saw Walsh pull away for a 76-64 victory.

The Chargers fell behind early against the Cavaliers' relentless full-court pressing attack, but weathered the storm and throttled down the tempo to their liking as the game wore on. Hillsdale trailed by as many as nine points early in the game, but a big 3-pointer by Braylon Morris and back-to-back baskets from Ashton Janowski helped pull Hillsdale back from the brink. Junior Caleb Glaser scored Hillsdale's final eight points of the first half, including a put-back at the buzzer, to send the Chargers to the locker room trailing Malone by just three, 36-33.

The first eight minutes of the second half were nip and tuck, as Hillsdale continued to battle and take the lead multiple times in a back-and-forth contest. CJ Yarian made two free throws to tie the game at 48 apiece with 12:09 to play and Hillsdale still very much in the game, but that would be the last time the Chargers would be tied or ahead with the Cavaliers.

Walsh's Quintero Barnett scored five points to help spark a 9-2 run that got the Cavaliers a meaningful advantage. Hillsdale didn't go away, with a pair of baskets by Caleb Glaser and another 3-pointer by Morris keeping the Chargers in contact, but Hillsdale struggled to get stops as Walsh knocked down clutch 3-pointers to pull away in the final minutes of the game.

The Chargers kept Walsh from using their press to run away from the game, but ultimately couldn't overcome a difference in shooting efficiency -- the Cavaliers hit 54.5% of their 55 shots on the night, while Hillsdale shot just 46.3% from the floor on 54 shots. The Cavaliers had the edge in points off turnovers (13-6) and points in the paint (44-38), more than making up for a Hillsdale advantage in second-chance points (14-10).

Glaser had a huge night for the Chargers, shooting 7 of 12 from the floor and finishing one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists, and Ashton Janowski chipped in 13 points and two assists as well for the Chargers. Braylon Morris added nine points off the bench, Connor Stonebraker chipped in six, and Cole McWhinnie aded five points and three assists as well.

Hillsdale falls to 5-8 overall, 2-3 in the G-MAC and has a tough road trip ahead, as the Chargers head for Kentucky this weekend. Hillsdale plays at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday at 8:45 p.m. Eastern, and then head to the east side of the state to take on Thomas More at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
