In its first conference match since the Midwest Regional Crossover, the Hillsdale College volleyball team looked confident and in control in a dominant sweep of visiting Ursuline on Friday.
The Chargers rolled to a 25-11, 25-21, 25-14 victory over the Arrows, nearly doubling up Ursuline in kills and hitting .280 to the Arrows' .049 in a strong performance at the net.
Hillsdale broke open the first set with a 7-0 run, turning a 5-5 deadlock into a 12-5 lead thanks to two kills from
Taylor Cook and back-to-back aces by
Madison Peal. The second set was significantly tighter as the Chargers put together several runs but couldn't shake Ursuline until late in the set. Maddie Krappman contributed two kills and a block in a 4-1 run that opened up a 22-18 lead for the Chargers late and gave Hillsdale enough breathing room to take the set.
Set three was another dominant start and finish for the Chargers, who scored nine of the first 11 points to put the set and match away early.
Chloe Pierce, who was honored before the match for reaching 1,000 digs in her career with the Chargers had two service aces during a 6-0 run that proved decisive.
Hillsdale spread the offense around in the match, with 11 different players recording at least one kill. Krappman led the way with a career-high nine kills, while Cook chipped in eight kills and
Ellie Fles six kills and five total blocks.
Ella Byrum led the Chargers defensively with 12 digs,
Madison Peal chipped in seven and
Ella Vandermark added four kills and three blocks as well.Â
Setter
Grace Drake had an impressive all-around night, with 21 assists, four total blocks and seven digs, while
Elizabeth Andaloro added a career-high seven assists and three digs as well.
The Chargers (11-11, 6-4 G-MAC), have a quick turnaround to a tougher test tomorrow, as Hillsdale hosts Lake Erie in a Saturday morning match at 10 a.m. The much-improved Storm are in the hunt for a G-MAC Tournament berth and a Chargers victory tomorrow would go a long way towards locking up Hillsdale's spot in the G-MAC Tourney as well.
