Strong defense; late surge help Chargers power past Lake Erie on the road, 29-9

Another impressive defensive performance and a big day from All-American Shea Ruddy helped the Hillsdale College football team power past host Lake Erie 29-9 on Saturday.

The Chargers held their opponent to 10 or less points for the fourth straight week while conceding just 227 yards of total offense in the victory.

In fact, it was Hillsdale's defense that started the scoring for the Chargers. After Lake Erie's returner slipped at the one-yard line on the opening kickoff, Hillsdale's Drake Badger sacked Lake Erie quarterback Hunter Newell in the end zone three plays later for a safety to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead.

Hillsdale's offense struggled to capitalize on the early momentum, however, as a snap over the quarterback's head and an interception kept the Chargers scoreless on their first two drives.

Lake Erie was able to take advantage, connecting on a 60 yard pass play to set up a touchdown run that gave the Storm a 6-2 lead with 5:44 to play in the first quarter.

With the offense struggling to get in rhythm, Hillsdale's defense came up big again. After a goal line stand by the Storm gave Lake Erie the ball at their own three yard line midway through the second quarter, the Chargers recorded another safety as Newell stepped out of bounds while being pursued by Hillsdale's Evan Bienick and Neal Likens. That cut Lake Erie's lead to 6-4 and finally turned the momentum in Hillsdale's favor.

On the ensuing drive, the Chargers went 77 yards in six plays, thanks in part to a 40-yard catch and run play to Shea Ruddy. Quarterback Eli Boyce got Hillsdale's offense on the board with a 13 yard keeper for a touchdown, and Hillsdale added two more points on a pass by Ryan Skura to Andrew Konieczny for a two-point conversion.

The Chargers and Storm traded field goals to end the half, with Dylan DeDario knocking in a 26-yarder to make it 15-9 Hillsdale at the break.

Neither team could get on the board in the third quarter as the game settled into a defensive struggle. Hillsdale broke the deadlock early in the fourth quarter thanks to Ruddy, who gained 48 of Hillsdale's 60 yards on a scoring drive through receptions and carries, and finished it off with a six yard touchdown run to give Hillsdale a 22-9 lead and needed separation with 12:12 to play.

The Chargers put the game out of reach on the ensuing drive, going 70 yards for the score. Eli Boyce finished the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game, from 10 yards out, to put Hillsdale up 29-9 with just over five minutes left.

The outcome was no longer in doubt, but Hillsdale's defense had one more big play left. Lake Erie drove down to the one yard line looking for one more score before time expired, but Nolan Strake punched out the ball on the two yard line and Evan Bienick recovered the fumble to deny Lake Erie one final time.

Ruddy carried the load for Hillsdale's offense in an impressive performance, catching eight passes for 127 yards and adding another 15 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Boyce was 13 of 20 passing for 188 yards and added 23 rushing yards and two scores, while Colin McKernan led the Chargers offense with 24 rushing yards and Tutt Carrico caught three passes for 47 yards as well.

Drake Badger had a huge day on the line for the Chargers, leading the team with nine tackles, three for loss, and two sacks, including the one that forced the game-opening safety. Evan Bienick added eight tackles, 1.5 for loss, two sack assists and a fumble recovery, while Cos Davis chipped in six tackles and Alex Lee, Luke Penola and Hudson Jones each added five.

Hillsdale is now 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the G-MAC, and off to the team's best start since the Chargers' G-MAC-title winning year in 2018. Next up for Hillsdale is a critical three-game stretch with three contests at home, all against G-MAC title contenders, in a make-or-break opportunity for the Chargers to assert themselves in the race.

First up is undefeated Walsh, off to their best start since becoming a NCAA DII member and ranked 25th in the nation in the most recent AFCA poll. The Cavaliers will meet Hillsdale at 2 p.m. next Saturday in Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium for Hillsdale's Homecoming and a game with significant conference and regional import.
