Chargers win fourth straight match with 3-1 victory at Malone

The Hillsdale College volleyball team battled back again from a tough first set loss to down an opponent in four sets on the road on Saturday, taking down Malone for the Chargers' fourth-straight match win.

Hillsdale had chances to win set one, but came up short in close fashion in a 26-24 loss to fall behind one set to the host Pioneers. Set two was also back-and-forth as Hillsdale battled to avoid a 2-0 deficit. The Chargers led just 21-20 late in set two, but freshman Taylor Brownsword stepped up for the Chargers, slamming down three kills in a 4-0 run to close out the set 25-20 and tie up the match.

With momentum on their side, the Chargers rolled in sets three and four, pounding out 17 kills to roll to a 25-16 win in set three and hitting 13 more and .444 in a dominant 25-9 win to close out the match in set four.

Hillsdale once again rode a balanced offensive attack, with three players finish with double-digit kills a day after four hit double figures in the Chargers' win over Walsh. Taylor Brownsword keyed the attack with 18 kills and a .385 hitting percentage, Marcelina Gorny chipped in 14 kills, and Ellie Fles added 10 kills and six digs.

Chloe Pierce led the Chargers defensively with 22 digs, Hannah Baker chipped in 17 digs and two aces, and Madison Peal finished with 13 digs as well for the Chargers. Grace Drake played another strong match at setter for Hillsdale, finishing with 44 assists and adding six digs, five total blocks, three aces and three kills, while Molly Kennedy chipped in five total blocks as well.

Hillsdale improves to 14-11 overall, 9-4 in the G-MAC with the win. The Chargers lock up a spot in the G-MAC Tournament with the victory, and enter the final weekend of the regular season still alive for a top four seed and a home quarterfinal game, though Hillsdale will need help from other results to earn the spot. The Chargers finish the regular season with two matches at home, battling Tiffin on Friday at 7 p.m. and then taking on rival Findlay at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The match against Tiffin will also be Senior Day, where the Chargers will honor graduating seniors Molly Kennedy and Marcelina Gorny.
