Chargers Sweep Team Podium at Upper Midwest Conference Championship

The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team competed in the ACUI/SCTP Upper Midwest Conference Championship from October 2-4 at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH. The event consisted of 100 each of American Trap, American Skeet, and Sporting Clays plus 50 Trap Doubles, Skeet Doubles, and Super Sporting.
 
The match began with Skeet Doubles and Super Sporting. Hillsdale was the top scoring team in each discipline. In the former, sophomore Zach Hinze finished in 2nd place after a 3-way shoot-off for 1st with a perfect 50-straight. Women's 1st place went to junior Marin McKinney with 49/50. Also hitting 49 targets were sophomores Max Versluys and Brayden Hoppa. Rounding out the team score of 245/250 was a tie between seniors Davis Hay and Luke Johnson, each with 48/50.
 
Hinze took Men's 3rd place in Super Sporting, breaking 46/50 targets on a challenging course. Junior Taylor Dale (38/50) broke more targets than any other lady at the shoot. 2nd went to junior Lucci Kern after winning a shoot-off at 37/50. Versluys (42/50), Hay (40/50), senior Alex Hoffman (39/50), and Johnson (39/50) completed the team score of 206/250.
 
Saturday was American Skeet and Sporting Clays. The Chargers hit 494/500 in Skeet, a performance earning them 1st place team. Johnson hit perfect 100/100 and finished as Men's 2nd after a shoot-off. Versluys and Hay each broke 99 targets. Also contributing to the team score were a tie between Hinze (98/100), Hoppa (98/100), and McKinney (98/100). McKinney took 2nd Women's Skeet.
 
Hillsdale also took 1st place team in Sporting Clays. Leading was Hay with a score of 88, earning 3rd place in the Men's category. Hillsdale women swept the podium in this discipline with 1st going to Dale (82/100) and, after a shoot-off, 2nd to senior Ava Downs (79/100) and 3rd to McKinney (79). Contributing to the team score of 424/500 were Hay, Hinze (86/100), Johnson (85/100), Versluys (83/100), and Dale.
 
American Trap and Trap Doubles were the final events on the last day of competition. The Chargers hit 490/500 in Trap, the most of any team. Hoffman's score of 99/100 was Hillsdale's top performer and after a shoot-off finished as Men's 3rd. Breaking 98 targets were the trio of Corbin, Hay, and Johnson. Corbin was the top scorer of any woman in attendance while 3rd place went to McKinney (97/100). Downs also hit 97 targets but did not place.
 
Hillsdale broke 240/250 targets in Trap Doubles. Kern hit the only perfect 50/50 of the match and won Women's 1st place. Hay and Johnson shot off for Men's 1st and 2nd after breaking 49/50 with the latter taking top honors. Freshman Kinsey Duzan hit 46/50 targets, but did not place after a shoot-off for women's 3rd. Also hitting 46/50 was Hoffman to round out the team total. The Chargers were again the top team scorer in the event.
 
When all scores were totaled, the Chargers earned the title of Team High Overall with 2099/2250. 2nd went to Bethel University and 3rd to Clemson University. Individually, Hay took 3rd place Men's HOA after breaking a total of 422/450 targets. Johnson was 4th (419/450) and Hinze 5th (414/450). Kern and Dale tied for Women's 2nd with 395/450. The former finished with silver and the latter took bronze. McKinney finished just a single target behind. Downs (391) was women's 5th and Corbin (387) was 6th.
 
The Chargers next travel to Sparta, IL and the World Shooting and Recreation Complex from October 9-11 for the ACUI/SCTP Fall Central Midwest Conference Championship.
