*Stats from 2025-26 season

Scouting the Opposition:
The Chargers open the 2026-27 campaign with NAIA program U of M-Dearborn, which is looking to rebound from a seven-win season in 2025-26 and is off to a 2-2 start so far.
The Wolverines turned over much of their lineup from last season but brought back a key foundational piece in senior guard Jackson Reynolds, a high-scoring combo guard who was recognized as the top NAIA junior student-athlete in the nation last year. With most of Reynolds' running-mates from 2025-26 gone, U of M-Dearborn has filled in with new faces.                                  Sophomore Nick Sobush, formerly of Siena Heights, has proved to be an ideal compliment to Reynolds on the perimeter, while twin brothers Terrance and Teyshaun Hicks, who led ATAP Pontiac to a MHSAA state title in high school, add significant scoring punch as well.
Native Detroiter Lozell Kearney gives the Wolverines a post presence to build around defensively, and splits time with Zakary Byrd down low. JuCo transfer Malachi Jackson is the team's top offensive threat off the bench.
Mo Bazzi is entering his second season as head coach and was formerly an assistant for the Wolverines for multiple seasons before taking over the head job.
Hillsdale is 14-0 all-time against U of M Dearborn in a series that first began in 1978, most recently with an 80-64 win on Nov. 16, 2023.
Scouting the Chargers:
There's optimism in Hillsdale after a rebuilding season in 2025-26 that saw the Chargers fall to 11 wins and finish outside the top three in G-MAC play for the first time since joining the league in 2017-18.
While that outcome was a bitter pill for Hillsdale, it did allow a young roster to get valuable experience, and that should pay dividends in 2026-27 as the Chargers return more veteran players than any other team in the conference.
Hillsdale should be especially formidable in the post with all four players in their forward rotation returning, led by senior Caleb Glaser, who finished second on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game and tied for the lead in rebounds with 5.6 in 2025-26. He's joined by veteran center and fifth-year player CJ Yarian, who averaged 5.6 rebounds per game and led the team in blocks; skilled power forward Garrett Bolte, who averaged 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and started 26 contests, and Connor Stonebraker, who brought instant offense off the bench for the Chargers with 9.1 points per game as well.

The Chargers have to replace their starting backcourt with the graduation of All-G-MAC honoree Ashton Janowski and Cole McWhinnie from last year's squad, but Hillsdale still has plenty of experience to turn to on the perimeter. Second-year players Braylon Morris and Tommy Morgan were major contributors on the wing last season, with Morris dropping two 20-plus point games and averaging 8.7 points, and Morgan providing critical defense and chipping in 7.4 points per game as well.
At the point, sophomore Paxton Giertz, who played in every game last season, will battle veteran Michael App and freshman Cade Dirkse, a fluid guard from Wisconsin, to become the next starting ballhandler for the Chargers. Dirkse is part of a talented freshman class that includes wings Leland Berg and Griffin Ridner Richard and post Cole Albers that will have a shot to contribute right away with the elimination of the redshirt year and the new five-year eligibility rule.

A potential x-factor for the season is sophomore wing Matt Buckman. Buckman was heavily limited his freshman year in 2025-26 due to recurring injuries, but is in better health for 2026-27 and was a prolific high school scorer. If he can stay healthy, he could crack the rotation for the Chargers.
Returning for his fourth season as head coach of Hillsdale College is Keven Bradley, who has a 49-38 record so far leading the Chargers. Assistants Jackson McLaughlin and Braeden Proctor return for a second year to join Bradley on the staff for the 2026-27 campaign.

Other Notes:
  • The Chargers were picked to finish sixth in the G-MAC Preseason Poll released in late October. Defending champion Walsh was picked to repeat with five first place votes, just ahead of second place Lake Erie, who also picked up five first place votes. Ashland was third with one first place vote and Findlay was fourth, while fifth-place Kentucky Wesleyan picked up a first place vote as well. Since joining the league in 2017-18, Hillsdale has placed third or better in the final standings in eight of nine seasons. The Chargers also are looking to extend a streak of nine straight seasons of making the G-MAC Tournament.
  • Caleb Glaser went from a substitute to a key player for the Chargers in 2025-26, cracking the starting lineup midway through the season and finishing the season as the team leader in points as well as second in both rebounds and blocks. Glaser had 17 double-digit scoring performances in 2025-26, including a career-high 22 in a home win over Kentucky Wesleyan, and hit double-figures in 12 of his 16 starts after Jan. 3. The top returning scorer in a deep and experienced post rotation, Glaser should be a focal point for the Chargers this season.
  • As a freshman thrust into Hillsdale's rotation in 2025-26, sophomore wing Braylon Morris showed tantalizing flashes of the player he could become with more seasoning.  Morris had 10 double-digit scoring games for the Chargers off the bench, including a team-best for the season 28 points in a home upset win over Lake Erie and 22 points at Truman State. A strong shooter who made 38% of his 3-point attempts last season and a gifted athlete, Morris should have a much bigger role for the Chargers in 2026-27.
  • After two seasons of limited playing time, Connor Stonebraker was the biggest breakout player for the Chargers among several strong candidates in 2025-26. An athletic post player with scoring touch, Stonebraker appeared in all 29 games for the Chargers and finished third on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game, including a career-high 23 win a win over Cedarville on Jan. 15. Hillsdale has big plans for Stonebraker this season as the Chargers hope to make major improvements.
  • A veteran presence with many games under his belt, fifth-year center CJ Yarian has made a career out of doing the dirty work down low for the Chargers. Yarian led Hillsdale with 5.6 rebounds per game in 2025-26, and has always been a willing and skilled passer in the post throughout his career, with an impressive 2.3 assists per game as well. Yarian finished 2025-26 ranking fourth in the G-MAC averaging 0.9 blocks per game. He enters his final season just 49 rebounds away from surpassing 500 rebounds for his career, an impressive milestone that only a few Chargers have reached in program history.
