The Hillsdale College men's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't claw its way back into the game against a high-octane Lake Erie attack in a 91-73 loss to the host Storm on Thursday night.
Hillsdale played Lake Erie to a dead heat in the second half, outscoring the Storm 42-41, but couldn't overcome a 19-point halftime deficit as the Storm poured in 50 first-half points to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The Chargers threatened a comeback early in the second half, cutting a 26 point deficit in half with a 15-2 run punctuated by an
Ashton Janowski layup with 13 minutes to play. But that was as close as Hillsdale would get, as Lake Erie responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to help push the lead back to 20-plus points.
Hillsdale actually outshot the Storm from the floor, 50.9% to 46.8%, but couldn't overcome a deficit 3-pointers, as Lake Erie made 13 to the Chargers' five, or turnovers, as Lake Erie turned 22 Hillsdale giveaways into 26 points.
Caleb Glaser led the Chargers with 12 points, and
CJ Yarian added 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks off the bench as Hillsdale got solid production from the center position.
Braylon Morris chipped in 10 points,
Cole McWhinnie added nine points, six rebounds and four assists, and
Ashton Janowski finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists as well for the Chargers.
Hillsdale falls to 9-14 on the year, 6-9 in G-MAC play, and has another tough road game on tap on Saturday, traveling to Ashland to take on the second place team in the conference standings in a 3 p.m. contest.
