The Hillsdale College men's tennis team bounced back from a tough loss last weekend to earn a critical in-region win at home on Saturday, as the Chargers took down visiting Purdue Northwest 6-1.
Hillsdale changed its doubles lineups entering today's match and got an immediate boost of energy that proved critical to getting the match started on the right foot. The Chargers' No. 1 doubles team of juniors
Ellis Klanduch and
Henry Hammond took care of business in a 6-4 victory, and the Chargers' two freshmen
Jackson Clements and
Patrick Cretu also came through at No. 3 doubles, gritting out a 7-2 tiebreak to secure the doubles point for Hillsdale in clutch fashion.
The Chargers looked strong in singles play to secure the match victory with ease. Sophomore
Ryan Papazov won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 over the Pride's Samuel Dickson at No. 1 singles, and Hammond also won a solid 6-4, 6-4 match over Purdue Northwest's Dani Chicano Melero at No. 2 singles as well.
Cretu continued an impressive start to his first collegiate season by clinching the match for the Chargers with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Raphael Valente.
With the match already won, Hillsdale picked up two more victories, as Klanduch cruised past the Pride's Pedro Diaz Camacho, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and
Alex Cordero Lopez won a third set tiebreak to end the night in style at No. 6 singles for the Chargers, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.
Hillsdale improves to 3-1 on the season ahead of a challenging road weekend. Hillsdale is next in action next Saturday, with a road trip to perennial Midwest Region powerhouse Ferris State for a 2 p.m. match. The Chargers will then stay on the west side of the state to play again on Sunday against another top team in the region, Davenport, in Grand Rapids at 11 a.m.
