The Hillsdale College men's tennis team showed its grit to improve to 2-0 on the season, grinding out a hard-fought 5-2 win over Michigan Tech at the Biermann Athletic Center on Saturday.
The Chargers fell behind early, dropping the doubles point to the Huskies despite a 6-4 victory from their top pairing of
Ryan Papazov and
Ellis Klanduch.
That deficit didn't matter, however, as Hillsdale took five of the six singles points on offer to win the match.
Klanduch showed great heart at No. 4 singles, rallying from a first-set loss to force a third set, then rallying again from 3-0 down in that final set to triumph over Michigan Tech's Sabri Laphitz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Chargers also got dominant wins at No. 1 singles from Papazov, who rolled past the Huskies' Landon Coates 6-3, 6-1, and from
Henry Hammond at No. 3 singles, who made quick work of Michigan Tech's Haitam Aboufirassi, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman
Patrick Cretu also picked up an impressive win at No. 5 singles, taking down Michigan Tech's Andres Horobeanu, 6-1, 7-5, and
Alex Cordero Lopez closed out the match for the Chargers with a gutsty win at No. 6 singles, winning the important points at the end of sets to take a narrow 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory over the Huskies' Ian Pinoo.
The Chargers will be in action at home again next Saturday, taking on Goshen in a match scheduled to start at 10 a.m. in the Biermann Athletic Center.
