The Hillsdale College men's tennis team had a trying 2025-26 campaign, but persevered to end its season in the G-MAC Tourney for the eighth-straight year.
The Chargers were beset with injuries from start to finish in 2025-26, rarely fielding their full lineup in top condition in the fall or the spring portions of the season.Â
Despite those challenges, Hillsdale made the best of what it had. The Chargers showed promise at the ITA Midwest Regional in the fall, with freshman
Patrick Cretu making a deep consolation bracket run early in his career, and junior
Henry Hammond and sophomore
Rintaro Goda each winning multiple matches.
Hillsdale continued to push in the spring portion of its schedule, getting junior
Ellis Klanduch back from an injury that held him out all fall, and overcoming an 0-3 start in conference play with four straight match victories to earn the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
The Chargers' run came to an end in the G-MAC Tournament quarterfinal in a loss to Walsh, as the wave of injuries finally caught up with Hillsdale in the first round of the tourney. Hillsdale finished the 2025-26 campaign with a 9-10 overall record, and a 4-4 record in G-MAC play.
Hillsdale had two players earn all-conference honors, as Klanduch was sensational after returning from injury with an 11-3 singles record for the Chargers to earn a second team All-G-MAC honor for the second straight season. Sophomore
Sam Plys also received second-team honors, stepping up in a big way for the Chargers and playing at No. 1 and 2 singles for much of the year.
The Chargers will aim for more in 2026-27, as Hillsdale had no seniors on the roster this year and all eight players are eligible to return. In particular, a full year of health for Klanduch as well as Cretu, who showed great promise before a midseason injury, and Hammond, a 2024 All-G-MAC player who battled injuries all season, could allow Hillsdale to take a big step forward.
Veterans
Ryan Papazov,
Alex Cordero Lopez and Goda, all now with multiple seasons of matches under their belt, will give the Chargers a deeply experienced lineup to try and make a move up the standings in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
