The Hillsdale College men's tennis team was unable to run its winning streak to three straight to start the spring 2026 season on Saturday, falling to visiting Goshen 5-2.
The Chargers found themselves in an early hole, as Goshen captured all three doubles flights to take the doubles point. That meant Hillsdale had to fight back in singles, needing wins in a minimum four of the six matches to pull out a victory.
Hillsdale got halfway there, as junior
Henry Hammond won in a dominant 6-3, 6-3 performance at No. 3 singles over Goshen's Mahmut Emre Gurmeric, and freshman
Patrick Cretu also got a victory in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4 over Denis Stanculov.Â
That was all Hillsdale would get, however, as the Chargers found themselves on the wrong end of close matches in the other four flights. Goshen won in three sets at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and captured tiebreaks to claim victory at No. 4 and 6 singles and take the match.
Hillsdale is now 2-1 on the season and is off until next Saturday, when the Chargers host Purdue Northwest at home for an important regional match at 5 p.m.
