Chargers finish Dome Invite on winning note; top Truman St. 5-3

The Hillsdale College softball team brought its time in the Rosemont Dome this weekend to a happy close on Sunday morning, rallying past Truman State for a 5-3 victory.

The win means the Chargers finish the Lewis Dome Invite 3-2 on the weekend, and now sit at 5-5 overall.

The Chargers had to come from behind in the victory. Hillsdale trailed 3-2 after Truman State scored two runs in the top of the third inning, but tied the game in the bottom half. The Chargers' first three batters in the inning reached on walks, loading the bases with no outs, and the Chargers pushed Sydney Davis across for the tying run on an RBI groundout by Olivia Liguori.

Hillsdale's breakthrough inning came in the bottom of the sixth, with the score still tied at three-all. Anna Chellman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and give the Chargers a baserunner with no outs, and pinch hitter Ronnie Craft hit a single to left center immediately following.

Trying to move the runners over, Taylor Lewis hit into a fielder's choice and Truman State committed a throwing error, allowing pinch runner Ava Stripp to score what would ultimately be the winning run. Davis gave Hillsdale some insurance with a RBI double, her second of the game, on the next batter to put the Chargers up 5-3.

With just three outs to get in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, reliever Grace Harris induced three flyouts and stranded one runner to seal the win for the Chargers. Harris (4-1) picked up the victory, pitching four and a third scoreless innings in relief of starter Mackenzi Maxson with three strikeouts and no walks. Maxson struck out two and walked one in two and two-thirds innings of work as well for the Chargers.

Hillsdale had taken an early lead in the game in the bottom of the first inning, as a RBI double by Davis and a RBI single by Nathalie Hagle had given the Chargers a 2-0 lead before Truman pulled ahead in the third.

Davis was 2 for 3 with two doubles to lead the Chargers at the plate, and Taylor Lewis was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases as well.

Hillsdale will have the next weekend off before returning to action with four games in St. Louis on March 7 and 8, beginning with a contest against Wisconsin Parkside on March 7 at 2:30 p.m. ET, 1:30 PM central.
