Haas captures shot put title; Chargers place fifth as a team at G-MAC Indoor Championships

Already a G-MAC Champion in the weight throw, senior Ben Haas added another title on Saturday to help the Hillsdale College men's track and field team to its best finish at the G-MAC Indoor Championships as a team since 2022.

The Chargers placed fifth with 64.5 points, Hillsdale's best showing in an indoor conference championship since placing fourth with 75.5 points in 2022. Haas played a major role, adding a first place finish in the shot put on Saturday with a throw of 17.77 meters to his championship in the weight throw from Friday night. It's Haas' first indoor conference title in the shot put, adding to his four consecutive crowns in the weight thrower and making him one of the most decorated throwers in G-MAC history. For his performance this season, Haas also earned co-G-MAC Field Athlete of the Meet honors.

Haas wasn't the only Charger to score big points on Saturday for Hillsdale. Senior Ross Kuhn took runner-up in the mile, finishing in 4:08.75, in a performance that was critical to Hillsdale's fifth place finish. The Chargers also had three athletes place with marks that ranked in the top 10 all-time at Hillsdale in their events. Senior Gabriel Phillips placed fourth in the 3,000m run, adding to his fourth place finish on Friday in the 5K, and did it in 8:20.58, the sixth-fastest time indoors in that event in Chargers history.

Freshman Henry Thuet also placed an impressive fifth with a personal best in the 800m run in 1:53.83, ranking 10th-fastest all-time indoors in that event in Hillsdale history, and fellow freshman Wyatt Widolff took seventh in the 400m run in a time of 48.82 that moves him into ninth place all-time on Hillsdale's indoor list in that event.

Senior Alfonso Garcia took fifth in the triple jump in 13.94 meters to score valuable points for the Chargers, and Hillsdale's 4x400m relay team placed eighth in 3:24.38 to score as well.

Just one event remains in the indoor track and field season for Hillsdale, as the Chargers prepare to send throwers Haas and Dominic Scharer to the NCAA DII Indoor Championships scheduled to be held in Virginia Beach on March 13 and 14. The field will officially be announced this coming Tuesday, and an announcement will be posted on hillsdalechargers.com once the field is finalized.
