It's good to be home for the Hillsdale Chargers softball team -- especially the offense.
The Chargers returned from Florida to open both G-MAC play and their home slate at Johnny Williams Field against visiting Lake Erie on Sunday, and put up big numbers offensively, scoring 19 runs on 18 hits to sweep past the Storm and take a 2-0 record in the conference.
Hillsdale got the better of Lake Erie in an offensive slugfest in the opener, with both teams landing big blows in a 10-8 thriller. The Chargers never trailed after the second inning, rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the top of the first with a two-run double by
Maggie Olaveson in the bottom of the inning, and pulling ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, thanks in part to a RBI triple by
Sydney Davis.
But Hillsdale never got comfortable in the contest thanks to strong slugging by the Storm, who hit three home runs in the game to keep the pressure on the Chargers. Hillsdale had the answers at the plate every time, however, plating four runs in the fourth on a RBI double by
Ava Stripp and a two-run home run by
Nathalie Hagle, and getting a valuable insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI triple by
Emma Sather.
All told, Hillsdale finished with seven extra base hits in the victory. Sather added a double to her triple to lead Hillsdale at the plate, and
Taylor Lewis had a double and a stolen base as well for the Chargers.
Grace Harris (5-3) earned the win for Hillsdale, striking out two and walking three in four and two-thirds innings of relief for starter
Mackenzi Maxson. Harris had her ups and downs against the hard-swinging Storm but got the job done in the seventh inning, getting the final two outs on a ground ball back to herself and a pop fly to the catcher with the tying run up to bat.
Hillsdale's offense continued rolling in Game 2, driving in nine runs, but a better all-around effort helped the Chargers tame the Storm and earn a 9-0 shutout victory in five innings.
Medleigh Danchak was 3 for 3 at the plate with a towering two-run home run to right center in the fourth inning that put Hillsdale in run-rule territory, shortly after Hillsdale's
Olivia Liguori hit a two-run home run of her own over the right field fence earlier in the inning.
Anna Chellman gave the Chargers the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single, and
Sydney Davis added a RBI single and also scored on a first-and-third play in the second inning.
Taylor Lewis had another double and a stolen base in the second game as well for Hillsdale.
Gracelynn Kelly (2-1) got the win in the circle for the Chargers, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in three innings of work in another solid outing. She shared the shutout with freshman
Katie Jonas, who pitched the final two innings with just two hits and no runs conceded.
Hillsdale improves to 14-11 on the season with the pair of wins. They'll stay in-state but hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to rival Northwood for a G-MAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in Midland, Michigan.
