The Hillsdale College softball team moved into sole possession of first place in the G-MAC with another doubleheader sweep on Sunday, powering past Ursuline with a strong offensive showing in both games at Johnny Williams Field.
Hillsdale fell behind early in the first game, as Ursuline scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Chargers got the run back with a well-executed first and third play that scored
Sydney Davis to tie up the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Chargers pulled ahead for good in the top of the third on a RBI single by
Olivia Liguori that scored Hagle, and added two insurance runs in the fourth when Davis hit a RBI single to score
Ronnie Craft and then later scored on a chaotic play that saw multiple Chargers get involved in a rundown on the bases and created an opening for the junior to get home. That made it 4-1 Hillsdale through four innings.
Ursuline closed the gap in the top of the fifth with a two-run single that cut the deficit to 4-3, but reliever
Grace Harris came on and ended the threat, then pitched two more scoreless innings to secure the victory for the Chargers.
Maggie Olaveson added an insurance run for Hillsdale in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left field to make the final 5-3.
Hagle was 2 for 3 with a double and a stolen base to lead Hillsdale at the plate in the win, and
Ronnie Craft reached all four times she made a plate appearance, on two singles and two walks, and also stole three bases in the contest. Davis, Olaveson and Liguori each added two hits as well.
Mackenzi Maxson (4-3) got the win on the mound for the Chargers, striking out five and walking three, and Harris earned her second save of the season with a strikeout and just two hits and no runs conceded in two and two-thirds innings of relief.
In the nightcap, Hillsdale's offense left no doubts, scoring five runs in the first inning and six in the sixth to walk off the Arrows in six innings and complete the sweep with a 14-6 final.
The Chargers took a big early lead, loading the bases and scoring their first run on a bases-loaded walk by Hagle. In the next at-bat, Olaveson drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double, and
Medleigh Danchak hit a RBI single to score Olaveson and give Hillsdale a 5-0 edge.
Ursuline hung around, getting a run back in the top of the second, and then, after Davis hit a RBI double in the bottom of the second to put Hillsdale up 6-1, hitting a three-run home run to cut Hillsdale's big lead to 6-4.
The Chargers punched right back in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs, including a
Ronnie Craft RBI single, to go back up 8-4.
Ursuline made a big push in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs and loading the bases with a chance to pull ahead, but Harris, on again in relief, worked her way out of the jam to keep Hillsdale ahead 8-6.
The Chargers made sure Ursuline didn't get a chance to bat again, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to trigger the run rule and walk off with a victory.Â
Hagle, Olaveson and Liguori hit three consecutive RBI doubles,
Emma Sather drove in a run on a bunt single, and Craft finished the game off with a two-run double for a 14-6 final.
Craft was 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, three RBIs and a stolen base, Olaveson was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Davis finished with three hits, a double and two RBIs as well.
Anna Chellman, Danchak and Sather each had multiple hits for Hillsdale in the victory as well.
Harris (6-3) got the win in relief, striking out one in two and a third innings of work.
Gracelynn Kelly had a solid start for the Chargers, pitching the first three innings with a strikeout and no walks, and
Katie Jonas also appeared in relief for Hillsdale.
The Chargers improve to 18-11 overall, 6-0 in the G-MAC with the victory. Hillsdale is one of two remaining unbeaten teams in G-MAC play and have two games in hand over 4-0 Ohio Dominican for the top spot. The Chargers will look to stay unbeaten in G-MAC play with another home doubleheader tomorrow, Monday, against Cedarville starting at 1 p.m.
