Two elite throwers for the Hillsdale College track and field team had record-setting performances at this weekend's home GINA Relays.
Now, both
Ben Haas and
Amelia Lutz are once again earning recognition from the G-MAC for their performances, as the conference office named Haas the G-MAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Lutz the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon. It's Haas' sixth weekly conference honor of the season and 15th of his career, while Lutz is receiving the award for the third time both this season and for her career.
Haas reset the Hillsdale College record in the hammer throw with a winning mark of 69.28 meters on Saturday at the Jim and Sallie MacGinnis Track at Hayden Park, moving back into second in the NCAA DII rankings currently this season. The defending NCAA DII national champion in the hammer throw and a three-time national champion overall, Haas beat his old record by more than a meter, with the fifth-furthest throw in G-MAC history. Far from a one-trick pony, Haas also excelled in the shot put, also winning the GINA Relays title with a season-best mark of 17.91 meters that ranks 11th in NCAA DII currently and leads the G-MAC in that event for 2026 as well.
Lutz, meanwhile, had a historic meet. On Friday, Lutz shattered her own school record set just last week, and also broke the G-MAC and GINA relays records in the shot put with a throw of 16.55 meters. That throw is currently the top throw in the country in NCAA DII, and it also broke the G-MAC record of 16.38 meters set by Ndidiamaka Anaraodo of Walsh in 2021, and a 21-year-old GINA Relays record of 16.09 meters set by Breann Smith of Kent State in 2005.
The shot put record was just one of two school records Lutz broke on the day, as she also threw a new Hillsdale discus record of 47.24 meters to place fourth in the elite competition. Lutz's throw broke the old record of 46.68 meters set by Hillsdale's Amber Mueller in 2014, and is a NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark that ranks 21st nationally. On Saturday, Lutz also won the hammer throw for the Chargers, with a new personal best mark of 55.20 meters that ranks 15th in NCAA DII to date, and is the seventh furthest PR in the hammer in Hillsdale College history, while also placing seventh in the javelin with a throw of 29.05 meters.
Both Haas and Lutz are in great position to compete for NCAA DII national titles in May, but first will look to add to their record totals with a strong performance at another home meet, the Hillsdale Tune-Up, this weekend on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25.
