Hillsdale overcame a four-run first inning deficit to take a lead into the sixth inning against fourth-seeded Findlay in both teams' G-MAC Tourney opener, but a big inning from the Oilers turned the tables in a 13-5 Chargers loss.
The Chargers fell behind 4-0 early in the game played on Wednesday afternoon in Firestone Stadiym in Akron, Ohio, thanks in part to a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, but kept their composure and battled back. Hillsdale cut the deficit to 4-3 with three runs in the top of the third, thanks in part to a leadoff double by
Taylor Lewis and a two-run home run by
Olivia Liguori. The Chargers then pulled ahead in the top of the fourth, with a
Ronnie Craft double leading to one run and
Nathalie Hagle batting in the go-ahead run on a single to left field to put Hillsdale up 5-4.
Hillsdale now had a chance to take the game, but missed opportunities to add to their lead, going down in order in the fifth and sixth innings. The Chargers then couldn't get out of a difficult sixth inning, as a leadoff walk and single by the Oilers led to a nine run explosion that saw Findlay not only pull ahead of Hillsdale, but also trigger the run-rule to end the game early and keep the Chargers from getting a chance to bat in the seventh.
Liguori led the Chargers offensively, going 2 for 2 with the two-run home run, and
Ronnie Craft and
Taylor Lewis each added a double for Hillsdale as well.
Grace Harris (10-8) took the loss in relief for the Chargers. Harris took over in the first inning for starter
Mackenzi Maxson and piloted Hillsdale through four and two-third scoreless innings to help the Chargers retake the lead, but couldn't keep the magic going in the sixth. Three Chargers errors, including one in that fateful sixth inning, made life more difficult for Hillsdale as well.
Hillsdale is now 29-19 on the season and will attempt to make the long climb through the elimination bracket and back into tournament contention. The road starts tomorrow for the Chargers, as Hillsdale takes on eighth-seeded Cedarville in an elimination game at 11 a.m. at Firestone Stadium. The Yellow Jackets fell to top-seeded Tiffin 15-0 in the first game of the tournament and will be in a similar desperation mode to Hillsdale, with the loser of tomorrow's contest seeing their season come to an end. If Hillsdale wins, the Chargers would play again on Thursday in another elimination game at 5 p.m.
